What to shop at Target for spring 2020!

This was one of the most epic try-on sessions I’ve done to date! I finally got to Target and shopped their spring collection. There is so much to chose from and so many different brands it’s hard to know where to start. I broke it down into two categories we all understand the best around here, Wardrobes Essential Checklist pieces and Bonus Buys. I did my best to explain the different fit points and style details, but if you have any questions drop a comment below! Everything is linked for your shopping connivence . PS, they are affiliated links 😊

Enjoy!

WARDROBE ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST

Best Color Short Sleeve/Sleeveless Blouse

Pattern Short Sleeve/Sleeveless Blouse

This option is from A New Day, and has the exact look and fit we want in this piece. Unfortunately the short sleeve style wasn’t available on-line yet but you can find it in stores in pattern, solid black, and other best colors. Same goes for the sleeveless! This top has no stretch, which is the case for most blouses. So size up if you need room in the bust or shoulders. I need room in the belly, so I would go up from a XL to an XXL.

White Vneck Tee

I am actually depressed over the fact that they discontinued the current style of Universal Thread tee I have in my wardrobe. This style is too fitted for my liking, and I don’t care for the fabric. In this style knit we are looking for something that is cut straight, not fitted. We also want a fabric that is more slub or vintage, giving it a relaxed drape to the body. I am wearing an XL in this one I tried, and rumor has it that the Ava + Viv vneck tees are a better option.

I tried on the A New Day option to compare. It wasn’t much better. I liked the fabric a little bit more but the cut was still too fitted for what I want to see in this piece. Also wearing an XL.

Chambray Shirt

I actually didn’t get to try this piece on, bummer! I did see it in the store but they didn’t have my size available. I love the fabric, wash, and details of both the light and medium wash so I wanted to highlight them here. I get a lot of requests on where to shop for a top like this, and these are great options. The only call out I have is that the medium wash has pearl snap buttons, if that’s a detail you don’t care for go for the lighter wash with the traditional shell buttons.

Best Color Cardigan

I wash crushing over both of these cardigans! The cut, the length, the fabric were all perfect for this piece. They are both long sleeve, I just have the sleeves ruched in the picture. I am wearing a L in both styles. Remember, try shopping down a size in layers to avoid that frumpy look loose extra fabric under the arm causes. The light blue was another piece I couldn’t find on-line yet, but both had plenty available sizes in store. This is a major player in your wardrobe, make sure you find a color that is good for you!

Denim Jacket

I am sorry to say that I can give this one a stamp of approval for the WEC. The is quite a bit of distressing on this denim jacket and that can really take away from the versatility you want. I want you to be able to dress this up or down in your wardrobe, and although this jacket is cute and the fit is good its productivity is compromised with the distressed details. This would be a great bonus buy for sure! I am wearing a L, another piece you want to size down in to avoid a boxy look.

Black Blazer

Trust me, even if you don’t dress up for work having a black blazer is essential. I love wearing this layer with graphic tees, jeans, and sneaker for a causal cool look. I have fun when I pair it with a blouse and some heels for a night out. Heck I have even worn a blazer as outerwear! If you want to keep it real casual the first option pictured is knit with no lining, giving it the best everyday look. The second option pictured is more traditional in fabric and is lined, it would give you more options to wear it business casual as well as weekend casual. I could only find the knit on-line. I am wearing a 16/XL in both, true to size for a more comfortable fit.

Cargo/Anorak Jacket

I was beyond excited to find this jacket available at Target! It has all the right details, the right weight, the right color, the right everything! This jacket is the perfect layer to bridge the gap from winter to spring. It is also has a hybrid style you can wear as outerwear or outfit wear! When you try it on be sure to adjust the inner toggle to fit you comfortably through the waist. I have on an XL. This runs true to size and is one of the only layers I actually care about you being able to wear closed.

Dark Wash Jeans

I am on the fence with these. The rise is good, the wash is great, the stretch is awesome. I am awkwardly in-between missy and plus size when it comes to bottoms. I can fit into a missy 16 but a 16W is much more comfortable. I would be afraid that a missy 18 in these would not fit right, and I didn’t find the plus option when I was in store (but they do offer it.) I have on a missy 16 here, and I might need to order the plus and see how they fit. The bigger takeaway is that I have on a short length, and I’m 5’8”! Remember, pants that are too long = frumpy.

BONUS BUYS

Fashion Knits

This style top is consistently on rotation in my ‘mom look’. I love wearing tops like this with jeans and sneakers for a casual and comfortable look that feels trendy and put together. I was excited to try some tie-dye options because I would love to get in on this trend, however these did not fit well. I have on an XL in the first one and a L in the second style pictured. Both of these tops are from Knox Rose, which historically runs very generous. Unfortunately neither fit through the tummy well. With the roomy shoulder on both of these, and tight fit through the belly I didn’t feel comfortable or confident.

This tunic style sweater shirt was a much bette fit, and color for me. It’s kind of bland for the price. I wasn’t sold on it at full price, if I saw this on the clearance rack for $10 or $15 it would look much different to me! I am wearing an XL.

Now we’re talking right! The fit and color are so cute, and I love the overall look. This is a fashion knit I feel so good in that I would pay full price for it, and by the end of the summer I can guess my cost per wear would be around $1. Totally work it! I have on an XL, and you can tell that with my apple shape it’s not as loose in the midsection as it is on the model who has a straight body shape. But it still fit very comfortably!

Graphic Tee

The color and print of this graphic tee is spot on, unfortunately it fits a little snug for me. This is a hard one to find because most graphic tees are going to come in a crewneck style, and crewneck tee won’t have a loose fit. That would create an unbalanced fit and cut, loose tee almost always are scoop neck, vneck, or boatneck. I am still on the hunt for one that feel comfortable for me! I’m wearing an XL and it fits true to size with how the garment is intended to fit.

Fashion Cardigan

These are a fabulous bonus buy year round. They are awesome for adding a splash of personality to staple tops like your vneck tee and chambray shirt. I am totally into the color blocking trend right now, along with the duster length fit of this option. Be intentional when shopping a piece like this. Make sure you are adding something to your wardrobe that reflects your personal style and in colors that are best for you! I am wearing a L, it does fit a little tight in the arms so shop true size if you need more room in the upper are and shoulder.

Cargo Vest

I have a vest just like this my closet, but in grey. We are looking for all the same fit points and details in this as we would in the cargo jacket. The biggest tip is to shop neutral colors. Grey, olive, navy, etc! I love wearing this for a fun surprise to any casual look, it’s a great way to get that cool mom vibe that is still relaxed and comfortable! I am wearing an XL and it runs true to size.

Faux Leather Jacket

I about tripped over my own two feet when I saw these two jackets in Target. This is by far the coolest bonus buy you can have in your wardrobe. You saw me wear mine when I had a mom’s night out and went to a concert, it added the perfect touch of edge to my outfit. This is awesome to wear with your dark jeans, best color blouse, and ankle boots, which are all from the WEC, showing how when you have your staples in your closet you can effortless wear fun statement pieces like these jackets! They both run true to size, an XL would be the best fit for me in both!

Overalls

I have been longing for a pair of overalls since I was pregnant with Waylon 3 years ago. Try finding plus size maternity overalls, yeah non existent! I have been on the hunt since, but being an apple shape brings some challenges with this piece. Since I carry all my weight in my belly finding overalls that fit around my midsection with out being too baggy in the leg is hard. When I size up the top and legs are so frumpy, when I shop true size they don’t fit my tummy. I’m not giving up though! I am wearing a 16 below, and they don’t fit.
