I'm A Size 16 And Tried On 11 Pairs Of Jeans At Maurices

I have not been shy when sharing my love for Maurices denim. It all started when I found THE BEST pair of pull on dark wash jeans that came in plus size and fit my apple shape perfectly. I loved these jeans so much I bought them in 3 different sizes as my weight and size changed over the course of a year and a half, going from a 20W to a size 16 missy. I raved about them and they are currently one of only 3 pair of jeans that I own! So many of you either ran to your nearest store, or ordered them on-line and soon began to love them just as much. Then…. I started getting some sad messages. You were having a hard time finding the magical pull on skinny jeans. You couldn’t find them in the store, and all of a sudden your internet search was coming up with no results.

I finally went to the source and asked. “Where are our pull on jeans!!!!??”

The answer was not what any of us wanted to hear, they discontinued them. [Insert sad crying face emoji here.]

With all of us needing to find our new go-to pair of jeans from what I think is a hidden gem of a store, I went into Maurices and tried on a ton of denim and here is what I found!

This was the first pair of jeans I had ever tried on at Maurices that weren’t plus size. They fit comfortably through the waist but the with my apple shape [meaning I carry most my weight in my tummy with narrow shoulders and narrow hips], the button fly closure was popping. I would soon find an alternative to get this trend driven detail but find a more flattering fit for my shape.

Here is where I saw the difference between jeans that were sized traditional numerical sizing and jeans sized XS - XL. The XL fit more comfortably on me than the traditional 16. This is also the difference between a super skinny fit and a jegging, they were overall more comfortable and fit better. Also, this is a perfect color denim if you want to add a fun bonus pair to your closet! I recommend grey, black, olive, or burgundy too.

I’ve come to realize at this point that the jegging style jeans are sized XS - XL, while the supper skinny jeans with stretch are traditional numeric sizing. This will make a big difference for me at the end, keep reading! Also make note that the button fly in the XL jegging did not gap on my tummy like the size 16 supper skinny jeans did!

Here is my alternative to the full button fly denim. If you like the idea of that trend detail but don’t love the fit or look of a full button fly, try finding something like this with a multi-button closure that has a tradition zip fly. It’s hard to tell but these jeans have a 3 button closure with a zip fly.

These jeans were AH-MAZING! This pair is in my top 3 from what I tried on here. The super soft fabrication felt like butter when I slipped them on. So incredibly soft and comfort, I couldn’t believe it. If you are looking for a pair of jeans in which you could spontaneously do a yoga routine in, these are them!

I really like the details and wash of this pair of jeans. The fit through waist was good, but the cut of the leg not so much. With my apple shape I am wide in the middle and then very narrow at the hips. Straight cut silhouettes don’t work great on me because I get some extra fabric that folds or gaps weird right under my tummy and in the crotch area. For me a skinny or slim cut works the best!

Here’s the deal on distressed or deconstructed jeans. I love them and love having a pair in my wardrobe as a bonus buy. But at the end of the day unless you’re getting them in different washes or a colored wash they start to look the same. One pair is all you really need in your closet. Also take note that I tried these on in a short length. I am 5’8” and always get my jeans in ankle or short. I want them to come above my ankle to create a clean and tailored look!

ps - I am not sure the jeans I linked are the exact ones I tried on here but they were the closest I could find.

Here is where you see that I don’t hide from you. I couldn’t even zip the fly closed on these jeans, and buttoning them was a challenge too. We are back in the super skinny size 16, which I already discovered earlier doesn’t fit as well as the jegging size XL. You will also start to notice that the super skinny jeans have EverFlex stretch and the jeggings have DenimFlex.

First note that the jeans that are linked are not the pair of jeans I tried on. They are the exact same style but the wash is different. This pair is a super high rise, and when they say super high rise they mean it! I am one who typically likes to be able to tuck her boobs into her pants, I like my bottoms high and tight! But the double button cinched in just a little too much for comfort with the rise on these jeans. This would be the same for pair 6.

Here is where things get interesting. Remember when I said early on I noticed that the size XL jeggings were fitting much more comfortably than the numerical sized 16 skinny jeans? Well it’s happening again with this pair. However this is the the absolute best pair of jeans if you are looking to check off dark denim on the Wardrobe Essentials Checklist! They are a classic dark wash with no extra details, making them timeless and versatile. So I asked the associate if I could try a size 18. But that’s not what she came back with. Scroll to the down to see what size I tried on next.

That’s right, instead of going to a size 18 she brought me a 16W [which is plus size for anyone not versed]. Ladies there was a HUGE difference going from a missy size 16 to a plus size 16. They fit so much better through my tummy and around my waist, they were fabulous! [I thought I wasn’t a plus size anymore, which is why I didn’t try them to start.] Also note that I got a short, and I’m 5’8”! Bottoms that are too long are too frumpy, don’t be shy about trying shorter inseams to get the right fit. I should also say that I wear a missy size XL in tops, so shopping plus size for tops isn’t my department, but that doesn’t mean I should look there for bottoms anymore. With my apple shape and carrying so much of my weight through my mid section the proportion of my top to middle is narrow to wide. So of course tops would be too big in plus, for that apple belly they are perfect to give me the room I need!
